Title: Describe the influence of culture on the experience of psychopathology. Why is it important for the clinician to acknowledge and appreciate the patient’s culture before determining a diagnosis? In the recent decades, numerous researches have shown the importance of culture as a constituent of mental health and illness and the essentiality of its understanding to the diagnosis and treatment of mental patients. According to the NIMH Culture and Diagnosis Group (Mezzich et al. 1993), culture is a set of meanings, values and behavioural norms that are learned and transmitted in the dominant society and within its social groups. It powerfully influences cognitions, feeling and concept of “self”. With different beliefs and ways of life across cultures, variations in psychopathology exist in terms of manifestation of symptoms, perception towards abnormality, etiology as well as treatment practices and outcomes.
