GREEK PLAYWRIGHTS & PLAYS Greece was renowned not only for its beliefs and values but also for what we call �the Arts�. One of the many innovative art forms that have originated from Greece is its theatre. Greek theatre has had a beneficial influence on Shakespearean theatre. There have been many Greek plays and playwrights. Most of which has been lost in time. Greek theatre is divided into two main types: Tragedies and Comedies. Tragedies are mainly plots that involve dramatic irony (situations where the audience realises the facts before the actors) in a disastrous story of deserved or undeserved catastrophe, bloody revenge or agonising problems of consciousness with remarkable coincidences. This mainly involves a hero of high birth whose hubris slowly brings him down until he crashes and burns. Watching a tragedy would put you in a state of fear and pity which is said to have a cleansing affect (katharsis). The same stories were often used over and over again with a new treatment added to it. In tragedy there were three great playwrights. They are entitled the �Three Trage......
