Intermediate Sanctions Intermediate sanctions are punishments that are less severe and costly than prison, but more restrictive than traditional probation (Cole & Smith, Chapter 12). These sanctions are the alternative to basic prison punishment and are based upon the notion that offenders can be rehabilitated back into normal functioning society. Through many different programs we can avoid just throwing an offender through the penal system and grant him an attempt to realize and correct his/her fault. Many of these programs are very effective and contain many positive components to altering the future lives of offenders, but all the programs also have negative components that destroy the idea of rehabilitation. The most effective and valuable intermediate sanction used today by our criminal justice system is the Intensive Supervision Probation program. Intensive Supervision Probation (ISP) is when probation is granted under conditions of strict reporting to a probation officer with a limited caseload (Cole & Smith, Chapter 12).
