Compare and contrast the views of Confucianism, Taoism (Daoism), and Legalism on “the role of the emperor” and “good government” Introduction The Zhou Dynasty defeated the Shang Dynasty and came to power in the 11th Century B.C., justifying their establishment with the idea of the “Mandate of Heaven”. The Western Zhou period lasted until 771 B.C., when barbarians forced them to the East, signaling the beginning of the Eastern Zhou period. However, during the Spring and Autumn Period (~ 770-476 B.C) they began to lose power increasingly . The Warring States Period began in 475 B.C., (when the seven warring states fought between each other for power) and finally ended when the Qin Dynasty unified China in around 221 B.C. The Warring States Period was a time of political turmoil and continuing conflicts. However, this period is also known as “the Hundred Schools of Thought” or “The Golden Age of Chinese Thought” , where scholars were sought after by regional leaders for advice on governing.
