America’s landscape of today was shaped by dams’ and their constructive and destructive forces over the past ten thousand years. Dams in America have been both natural and man made. Beavers were the first to do this; they built dams here in America as long ago as 10,000 years. Before the Europeans arrived, the only dams in North America were made by beavers, but what happened after their arrival is a whole different story. Today in America there are almost 70,000 large dams and up to two million small dams which block almost every American waterway. This papers focus is on the history behind the damming of New England waterways that swept through rural country during the 18th-19th centuries. It will also explain the how the industrial revolution favored and ensured continued dam construction. Dams were used to provide mechanical energy to mills and brought economic prosperity to owners.
