The novel "A Bridge To Wiseman's Cove" explores the effect that change has on the lives of the characters; Carl, Harley and Skip. Change is the essence of living. Our lives change, our dreams change the seasons change, our world changes. Some are sought after, some avoided. Some bring joy, others bring grief and sorrow. These characters' behavior evolves towards other people around them and by the way they act towards each other. For Carl Matt, life was just like a sailboat. All you had to do was just watch it come and go. When Carl first came to Wattle Beach, he was an awkward teenager, who never seemed to have the right words to say to anyone, especially girls. He was very conscious of his outer appearance and the fact that he is overweight. Carl always felt protective of his brother Harley - like a surrogate parent. His insecurity and shyness towards others was due to his unfortunate lifestyle.
