The Effects of Revenge Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Effects of Revenge Although there are many literary devices in the Scarlet Letter, revenge is one of the most evident. The Scarlet Letter not only portrays a life of sin and guilt, but the effects that revenge has on the plot of the story. The literary device of revenge was made popular on the Elizabethan stage by Thomas Kyd, whose Spanish Tragedy is a prime example of revenge. The theme is the revenge of a father for a son, in which the revenge is directed by the ghost of the man murdered, as in Hamlet. Another trait often found in revenge tragedies is the hesitation of the hero. Also, such concepts as: the use of real or farce insanity, suicide, intrigue, an able scheming villain, philosophical soliloquies, and the sensational use of horrors. (Holman 377) Using the following original, classical, title I will expose the effects revenge has upon the plot of the story, fundamentally exposing the nature of revenge and elaborating more on some of the concepts I listed above.
