Concepts of Horticultural Science Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Latin words hortus, garden, and cultura, culture, and together form horticulture, classically defined as the growing of plants. Horticulturists work in plant propagation, crop production, plant breeding, and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, and plant physiology. It is the part of plant agriculture that is concerned with what are often referred to as “garden crops”. The opposite branches, of course, are agronomy and forestry. Horticulturalists tend to plants so that they may be directly used by people for food, for medicinal purposes, or quite simply for esthetic gratification. This final feature is unique unto horticulture. Horticulture is concerned with the interaction of humans and plants, and as such has been around as long as man has utilized the plant kingdom for his advantage.
