“The emotional, sexual and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, “It’s a girl”.” This quote, by educator and author Shirley Chisholm, is an accurate portrayal of the stereotyping placed on women by society, regardless of whether one is referring to today’s society, or a society in the past. The way gender is portrayed in a text is never neutral, it is always a highly selective representation constructed to either challenge of reinforce social representations, whether intended by the author or not. Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, exhibits a strong construction of gender, although it is not always immediately obvious. In the time Frankenstein was written, the dominant view of women was as inferior beings at their best when submissively caring for children or doing housework. In writing Frankenstein, Mary Shelley has reinforced the dominant societal views of gender, as it was seen in her time, predominantly through the use of character.
