Rates of Reaction Coursework Aim: To determine whether if changing the concentration of a reactant alters the rate of reaction. Preliminary In this investigation I will look at rates of reaction and what may affect them. The concentrates that I will be testing are hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate. Here is the equation for the reaction between these two concentrates: Hydrochloric Acid + Sodium Thiosulphate �� Sulphur + Sodium Chloride + Sulphur Dioxide + Water Or 2HC1 + Na2S2O3 �� S + 2NaC1 + SO2 + H20 The rate of reaction can be affected by six different factors according to the reaction theory, these are: �� The Temperature �� The Concentration �� The pressure in gases �� Catalysts �� Surface area of particles The reaction above occurs when the particles collide with enough energy to break any existing bonds, and the higher the concentration of a substance the more the particles.
