World War One Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The First World War will always live on through literature, whether it be the literature from the time or literature written after the event.* We have all seen images of the men in the troops, anxious and brave before they go over the top. These three excerpts all deal with the experience of the troops in the First World War but the writers approach the subject in different ways perhaps because of the time they were writing and their attitudes to the war.* The first extract is taken from Pat Barker’s ‘Regeneration’. It shows the experience of a soldier who goes through a shell attack and has to deal with the human debris. It is a graphic account, which includes some stomach turning details like putting soil and ‘blackened bone’ into a bag. It is written much later than the time of the First World War in 1991 so perhaps the writer can include more horrific details for modern readers. The writer uses details of the feelings of the officer, ‘feeling sick in his stomach’ and ‘he felt something jar against his teeth’.* This brings home the feeling of him feeling distressed in th......
