Nonstress testing �� Adds another measure to a simple rhythm strip, the response of the fetal heart rate to fetal movement. �� The woman is positioned, and the fetal heart rate monitor is attached as with a rhythm strip. �� The woman pushes a button attached to the monitor (similar to a call bell) whenever she feels the fetus move. �� The heart tracing is marked by a dark line at these points. �� When fetus moves, the fetal heart rate should increase about 15bpm and remain elevated for 15 seconds. It should decrease again as the fetus quiets. If no increase in beats per minute is noticeable on fetal movement, poor oxygen perfusion of the fetus is suggested. �� Done for 10 minutes �� The test is reactive if two declarations of fetal heart rate(15beats or more) lasting for 15 sec. occur following movement within the 10 min. period. �� The test is non reactive if no accelerations occur with the fetal movements. �� The result also can be interpreted as non reactive if no fetal movements occurs or there is low short term fetal heart rate variability ( less than 6bpm) throughout......
