A proposition may be said to be epistemologically basic, if it is synthetic, expresses what is immediately or post analytically given at a particular time, and if it does not refer beyond what is thus given. Russell notes the following essential characteristics of a basic proposition: it must be known independently of inference from other propositions, but not independently of evidence, since there must be a perceptive occurrence which gives the cause and is considered to give the reason for believing the basic proposition�. it has a form such that no two propositions having this form can be mutually inconsistent if derived from different percepts.1 In the Inquiry, Russell uses the term epistemological premises as a general term, to cover not only basic propositions but also those other synthetic propositions, which are necessary for the deduction of such knowledge.
