1984: Winston's Downfall Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
It is possibly the most comforting feeling for a person to gain a relationship with another person that they can trust. In the novel 1984, George Orwell describes Winston Smith as a lost soul in a world of absolute government power and no individualism. Winston believes that he will never succumb to the government (known as the Party), but he is caught as a traitor and is eventually changed. While he thought he had trusting relationships with a store proprietor, a female rebel, and a member of a boycotting group, Winston learns that none of these people are who he thinks they are. The key to Winston’s downfall is the betrayal by the only people that he thought he could trust: Mr. Charrington, Julia, and O’Brien. The person least expected to turn on Winston was Mr. Charrington, a store owner.
From the first time that Winston steps into Mr. Charrington’s shop, he feels safe. It is a store in the land of Proles, people that don’t abide by the Party rules.
