The Ancient Olympics The Olympics originated in the ancient Greece during the eighth century B.C.. The Olympics were created to bring peace among quarrelling Greek city-states as well as to give Greeks soldiers a way to show off and practice their skills away from the battlefield. During this time period, there was a need for harmony between individual Greek city-states who were constantly at war with each other. Legend has it that King Iphitus of the Greek city-state Elis was in great despair over the constant battling and did not wish to see Greece tear itself apart through these wars, so he decided to consult the Oracle at Delphi (an Oracle was a priest or priestess who gave advice from the gods). At Delphi, the Oracle told him that he should go back to Elis and hold a competition open to all Greeks with several different events. Iphitus did as he was told and spread word of this competition.
