The Louvre Construction & Architecture • The first Royal Castle of the Louvre was founded by Philip Augustus in 1990 as a fort to defend Paris from the Vikings • Charles V turned it into a palace of the arts • Francois I and Henri II tore it down to build a real palace • The existing part of the Chateau du Louvre was built in the 1530’s • The architect Pierre Lescot designed many of the wings that defined the Louvre’s status • King Henry IV added the Grand Gallery. It was more than a quarter mile long and over a hundred feet wide. It was built along the bank of the ‘Seine’ river. • Henry IV, who promoted the arts, had many artists and craftsmen live and work on the lower floors. This continued for several hundred years till Napoleon III put an end to it. • Louis XIII finished the Denon wing of the Louvre, that was originally started by Catherine Medici. • Louis XIII also built the Richelieu wing, which started to be used for the Ministry of Economy of France.
