Racism and Discrimination in Australia Key Questions: 1(a) What is Discrimination? (1) Discrimination happens every day and in every different situation of our usual lives. I means to distinct between people and to make a choice of how we are treating them. Some of those choices are justified using real and relevant information but others are simply based upon prejudice, stereotypes and bias. Discrimination can lead to unfair treatment of people in different areas of social activities, which is a big problem in our modern society. (b) What is the difference between lawful and unlawful discrimination? (1) Discrimination is unlawful when it is based on one or more of the grounds out of race, sex, age, disability, pregnancy, sexuality and marital status and occurs in an area of public life, for example, employment, set out in the Equal Opportunity Act. Behaviours like sexual harassment and victimisation are also unlawful. Fair Discrimination is reflected in the choices we make that are based upon individual merit such as ability, personal achievement, skill, attitude......
