In the first chapter of the book, Currahee, Easy company is training at Camp Toccoa. After the training they are shipped to England. The men meet their captain, Captain Herbert Sobel who is portrayed as an egocentric and brutal commander of E Company. In the second chapter the men participate in the Battle of Normandy on D-Day. Lieutenant Dick Winters is dropped several miles off course and it shows his attempts to get to his assigned target. Easy Company conquers the French town of Carentan and we see the fear of Private Blithe, who is fighting against his feeling of letting his fellow soldiers down. When Easy Company returns to England they receive new replacements for the lost soldiers. Winters becomes the captain and leads E Company as it is air-dropped into the Netherlands for another mission. Next, E Company takes on the Germans in the Ardennes. Easy Company is hold up near the Belgian settlement of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
