What light is shed on Macbeth’s character through his interactions with the witches, Banquo and Macduff? In Shakespeare’s 1606 tragedy, the audience observes the pitiful fall of a tragic hero, Macbeth. This honored soldier of Scotland, for whom the play is named, is an inherently noble and principled man who displays enormous potential for fame and honor. A tragic hero is generally regarded as a complex character of higher moral value than the common spectator. Fighting the internal battle between goodness and evil, the hero undergoes a transformation from delight to despair due to his tragic flaw. This fateful characteristic ultimately leads to his ruin, and evokes feelings of collective pity and fright from the viewers. Macbeth fits the description of a tragic hero to the fullest extent because he is a promising and decent man whose admirable qualities are overshadowed and compromised by an excessive lust for power.
