Pediatric case study: eighteen-month old, Bacterial Meningitis Description: This is an unusual case of proven pneumococcal and meningococcal mixed meningitis in an 18-month-old girl. Pathophysiology � meningitis is the inflammation of the meningies (the covering of the brain and spinal cord). The manifestations include upper repertory infection and several days of gastrointestinal symptoms such as poor feeding. Severe headache, drowsiness, delirium, irritability, restlessness, fever, vomiting, and nucal ridgity are significant symptoms. An 18-month-old girl was admitted to the emergency unit of Newton Memorial hospital in September 2007, with no previous medical history. During a two week period, this 18 weak old girl was evaluated for similar complains on five occasions in the emergency department. At the first visit the infant was experiencing nasal congestion with a history of fever. After a negative physical examination, acetaminophetamen was prescribed for an upper repertory infection.
