Reading about war has changed my way of thinking about life and has made me realise that peace is the most important thing for survival and development. Although, nowadays, this theme has been a living reality and most importantly, a living hell, War literature and especially modern literature, exposes the psychological, besides historical-political consequences of war: the traumatism of the individual. After reading: “Observe the Sons of Ulster marching towards the Somme”, I started thinking of war as a psychological brainwashing chimera, as a disease rather than just the result of political interests. Frank McGuiness characters, as mechanisms and puppets of wider powers, unable to control their fate, remind of actual war realities, where soldiers become blinded by false values and motives, as well as enslaved in their ignorance. War and death as characteristics abusing identities dominate in the play “Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching towards the Somme”.
