Animal Farm George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm, was the pen name for Eric Arthur Blair. Eric Blair was born on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. His family was fairly prosperous civil servants, working in India on behalf of the British Empire, but moved back to England in 1904 to raise their children in a more traditional Christian environment. Blair attended public schools in England and was admitted to Eton College in 1917. After leaving Eton in 1921, he returned to India in 1922 to join the Indian Imperial Police. This gave Blair his first real experiences with the poor and dispirited whom he would later stand behind. Blair resigned from the police force because he was unhappy with his position as the �hand of the oppressor� and returned to England in 1927. In 1928, he moved to Paris to become a writer. He was once again living among the poor, and was eventually forced to temporarily give up his writings and become a dishwasher.
