It is about 120,000 square kilometers and is dominated by a south-central highland with an average elevation of 2,100 meters. The west part of Eritrea is rivers and fertile plains and the Red Sea borders the east along with a narrow strip of barren scrub land and desert. The Southern region are extinct volcanoes. Most of the population is rural and make their living through farming and shepherding. Eritrea goes back to the hundreds of years. Pharohs in Egypt conducted trades with Chiefs of the Red Sea Coasts. The Italians , Turks and Egyptians invaded this small country in Africa�s horn. Eritrea means �red.� In 1890, the Italians gave the name to this country.
