Nature A bushfire is not like any other fire. It is not like a barbeque or a cigarette lighter, which is very small and totally controlled. It is not like a fire used for back-burning, which is very much controlled. By nature, a bushfire is wild and uncontrolled. They can be small or huge, fast moving or slow moving. They are so unpredictable because they are controlled by natural elements, such as the wind. The wind can change direction at any given time, so that means a bushfire can as well. Bushfires have been known to suddenly change direction while fire fighters are trying to put it out, resulting in the death of the fire fighters. Location Bushfires occur mainly in the southern part of Australia. There have been records of bushfires occurring almost anywhere in the country, but the areas that have the greatest risk of bushfires are around South-eastern Australia, and some parts of South-Western Australia. Some of the major cities that have a high risk of bushfires occurring are Sydney (New South Wales), Melbourne (Victoria), Wollongong (New South Wales), Hobart (Tasmania)......
