The composer Harper Lee introduced “To kill a mocking-bird” through the perspective of an energetic little six year old girl known as Jean Louise Finch or Scout for short. Scout who lived in a small town in Alabama called Maycomb was trying to understand the concepts of racial discrimination and hatred. Maycomb like most small southern towns in 1935 had a problem with widespread racism. Scout does not carry the racism and double standards that the rest of the town carries. She is understanding and accepting of all human beings despite being surrounded by racist behaviour. Lee’s techniques in raising the issues of courage, growing up and prejudices is not limited to the first person narrative style, but also includes sight imagery, personification, descriptive and emotive language, characterisation, the development of characters and stereotyping. The first main theme in “To kill a mocking-bird” is courage. Lee portrays courage in the characters of Atticus Finch, Mrs. Dubose and Boo Radley.
