The three novels, 1984, Cat’s Cradle, and Grapes of Wrath, are all written by very intelligent authors with similar views on issues, yet different ways of treating the issues. All three novels involve industrial and scientific development, and the effects that they have on the characters. All three novels entail a utopia of some sort. George Orwell wrote the novel 1984 in 1949, shortly after two world wars. In his own lifetime, he had also lived in foreign-occupied countries, had worked as a policeman and fought in a civil war against a dictator. When he wrote 1984, he had already lost faith in the dream of a perfect world. Because of this, his story shows anything but a utopia. Instead, it describes what you might call a dystopia, and shows a society at war with its own citizens. 1984 deals with the individual in a dystopic society. It is a society made up of homogenous zombies who are brainwashed and programmed by the society’s rulers and departments. The main character is Winston Smith, whose job in the Ministry of Truth is to distort the truth in order to keep the citiz......
