According to Gerda Lerner in The Creation of Patriarchy, gender is a “costume, a mask, a straightjacket in which men and women dance their unequal dance”. Gender can be read to be a dominant theme in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, which was published in 1818, as postmodernist reading practices emphasise the sex of characters and notice significances of gender roles, gender descriptions and the distribution of power of men and women throughout the text.
