Socrates’ Examination of Life Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The Apology,” is a fictionalized account of the trial of Socrates in 399 B.C.E., as transcribed by his friend and follower, Plato. Socrates was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and rejecting conventional religious teaching. It is written in three parts: the first is Socrates’ defense in response to the allegations; the second is his response the guilty verdict; and the third is his response upon being condemned to death. One of the main points Socrates addresses in his soliloquy is the concept of an examined life. An unexamined life, in Socrates’ opinion, is one which has not been explored to its fullest extent, both physically and intellectually. In fact, the phrase “Carpe Diem” can be used to summarize his version of a fully examined life. Socrates names the features that most men look for in an examined life during his speech. He lists the pursuit of money and the management of a household as the first and most important aspects of an ordinarily explored life.
