Isabelle Allende’s Eva Luna Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Sexuality can be understood as a crucial element of the social life of humans, governed by implied and established rules of behaviour. Sexuality therefore influences social norms and society in turn influences the manner in which sexuality can be expressed. Chilean author, Isabelle Allende comes from a sexually repressive context, wherein sexuality and its expression was confined and dictated by social conventions. In her novel, Eva Luna, Allende constructs certain culturally defined representations of sexuality, allowing the reader insight into the socially constructed system of values and beliefs explicitly defined within the text. Through constructing sexuality, sex and more importantly the expression of such behaviours as instinctive, raw and impulsive emotion, Allende challenges the accepted social constructs, confronting the values and beliefs of the establishment.
