The Old Lake House The smell of fresh fish is usually not associated with happy thoughts; however, in my case, it brings me back to images of childhood games, peeling paint, and shag carpet, characteristics of my favorite childhood place, the old lake house. This was the only place where the term �only child� did not apply to me. Surrounded by my older cousins, I was just another mischievous child running around in the vast play land we had created. When looking back at the landscaping of the old lake house, burnt orange pine straw lay on the ground as snow in the north�s winter. From the siding to the carpet, it is apparent that brown was the key color of the era during the designing of this home-away-from-home. This once beautiful house paled in comparison to the titanic lake beside it. The wrap around porch provided many splinters to our dirty feet. The edge of the lake hosted a pier that became the foundation of our playtime. The lake was the center of our childhood games.
