Bless Me Ultima In Bless Me Ultima, Antonia comes from a family with strong traditions and rich culture. However, the traditions of Antonio�s mother, Maria, does not always agree with the traditions of Antonio�s father, Gabriel. In fact, their traditions never agree. While parents are supposed to do what�s in the best interest of their children, Maria and Gabriel cannot come to an agreement of what Antonio should be. Maria and her family, the Lunas, are devout Catholics and farmers. Their hope is that Antonio becomes a priest as well as a farmer. In essences, they want Antonio to be tied to the land. Despite being devout Catholic, there is still a spiritual relationship between the family and the earth. It is also interesting to note that the name Luna translates to moon, which is symbolic of how the family plants crops, according to the cycles of the moon. Gabriel and his family, the Marez, are vaqueros, or cowboys. While the Marez experience a spiritual relationship to the land, they do not believe in being tied to the land, unlike the Lunas.
