Why were the police unable to catch Jack the Ripper There are many factors and possible reasons as to why the police were unable to catch Jack the Ripper who murdered five prostitutes at Whitechapel in 1888. Factors like weaknesses in the police force, contradictions in evidence and lack of technology impeded the police's chances in catching the Ripper. Another possible reason why the Ripper was not caught could have been down to his cleverness and criminal knowledge. This made the Ripper one step ahead of the police and was one main factor in why he was not caught. One aspect of the investigation that confused the police was whether the Ripper was a resident. People that believed he was local began to have second thoughts. Due to the Ripper's precise cuttings in the murders he was thought to be a doctor; because only someone who had that knowledge would have been able to cut as precisely as that.
