Postman Knocks
In 1984 Neil Postman delivered a speech at the Frankfort book fair held in Germany. His Oratory was addressed to a well-educated, and primarily, European audience. He began by comparing Orwell and Huxley’s views on how society might be controlled in the future. Orwell saw a world where actions and thought were rigidly controlled by a “Big Brother” type government, while Huxley’s vision was of a society so enamored of trivial entertainments that it had no motivation to think at all. He saw these two differing ideas as basically the same thing. An end to free thinking.
His German audience had only to look over the Berlin wall to see an example of Orwell’s visions becoming reality. They must have wondered if, by ignoring Huxley’s warnings, they might come to a similar end, albeit, by a different route. Postman subtly plays to this fear throughout his speech.
