How fair is it to claim that Napoleon was ‘severely overrated as a military commander’? Every comment and argument about Napoleon produces two contrasting opinions. Since Napoleon’s death historians have debated whether he was, in fact, an extraordinary military commander that saved France and brought her many fine military victories or a fraud, who rode on the back of other people’s success and devised a clever propaganda machine to build up a reputation for himself. There are solid pieces of evidence and perfectly plausible points of view on both sides of the spectrum. Even the same pieces of evidence can be used for conflicting arguments. This makes it very difficult to actually come to a conclusion that wholly agrees or disagrees with the statement that he was severely overrated as a military commander. Other matters to consider when looking at sources about Napoleon are what motives the authors may have had, who wrote it and when because, for example, someone writing more recently may have the benefit of hindsight, but they may judge him on modern day principles of what......
