A Life Wasted “I have wasted my life” is the very controversial last line from the poem “Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island,” by James Wright (3). The poem is about the thoughts of a man lying in a hammock. Wright begins by using beautiful imagery of his surroundings and he also hints that those surroundings symbolize something more than their traditional meaning. The poem leads the reader to believe this because of its ending, which suggests that Americans so often get wrapped up in work or whatever else is going on in the world they forget to stop and take the time to smell the roses and appreciate life. This poem is cleverly broken into three parts, the title, the beginning, and the end. The beginning brilliantly uses imagery to illustrate the person’s in the hammock surroundings as something of beauty, peace, and tranquility, something he yearns for. The end, on the other hand, is one of criticism and dissatisfaction. The title is not something one would not normally consider as a part when splitting a poem up into sections. But the tit......
