Out of perceptual and motor activies, children build and refine psychological structures-organzied ways of making sense of expreience that permit children to adapt more effetively to their world. ( consistenet with the constructivist approach). Children move through 4 stages: sensorimotor-preoperational-concrete operational-and formal operational. Piagets stage sequence has 3 important characteristics 1. general theory- all aspects of cognition develop on a similair course of change. 2. invariant- always follow a fixed order, and no stage can be skipped. 3. Universal- assumed to describe the cog diev of children everywhere. Piaget believed that schemes-change with age. At first schemes are sensorimotor action patterns. For example, a 6 month old baby catches sight of, grasps and releases objects/ or the dropping scheme-dropping a rattle from her hand. By 18 months, the dropping scheme becomes much more deliberate. Soon, she shows evidence of thinking before she acts/ transitioning from a sensorimator to a cognitive approach to the world�one based on mental reperesntaions......
