In 1999, when I was thirteen, I was given the incredible opportunity to travel to Japan. Although I was raised as a Buddhist, nothing could prepare me for the vast difference in our cultures. Despite Japan�s westernized society, on more that one occasion, someone would stop me and ask to take a picture of me with my blonde hair. It was then that I realized, how fortunate I was to live in a diverse society. I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to live, work, and learn together with other races and ethnicities. And, although, diversity is an important component to a well-rounded education, as well as our daily lives, admission to universities should be based on academic merit, not geographical location, race, or ethnicity. Diversity is one of the goals for many higher education institutions across the nation. Having such a wide range of students, allows for that vital interaction that needs to take place between cultures.
