The Middle English Period (1066-1485)
England was invaded by the Normans in 1066 under the guidence of William I, the Conqueror. After the Norman conquest, England was divided into two societies and each one spoke its own language. The lower classes who were of the Anglo-Saxon race kept on speaking their Germanic tongue while the Norman nobles and knights spoke a dialect of French. Then French became the dominant language in England and was spoken by the upper classes from 1066 until late in the 14th century. The lower classes spoke English with some French influence in matters of vocabulary, prosody and spelling.
The English language started to decline. French was the language of the court and Latin was the written language of the Church and secular documents. There was a bilingualism among Norman officials, supervisors and some marriages of French and English. Most of English people remained English-speaking, but less and less English was written.
