The struggles of slaves didn’t start in America. From the time they were captured to the time they died, they suffered many hardships. When considering their trip from Africa to America, it was easy to see why many of them did not make it. For example, in some ships if slaves refused to eat, hot coal or fire was placed on their lips. They were naked and chained to the floor. This made it hard to move around, because of such over crowding. Many of these Africans were once free men who had families and responsibilities of their own. They had no idea their new American lifestyle would consist of either rural field labor or urban house chores.
There proves to be major differences in the treatment of house and field slaves as well as rural and urban slaves. It seems to me that house slaves were more mentally abused and field slaves took all the physical punishment. I think that the urban slaves had many more opportunities than ones who lived and worked in rural areas.
