Manifest Destiny: From Sea to Shining Sea The American population believed it was their right to expand, not to stay in one spot, but to grow and prosper elsewhere. Around 1840, Americans realized this was their destiny, which became known as Manifest Destiny. However, there were conflicts with Native Americans and Mexico. Native Americans realized expansion meant that they would be pushed out of their land. Mexico was involved because Texas wanted to join the United States. These conflicts helped define Manifest Destiny and the role it played in history. Manifest Destiny – a phrase stating that the United States had a God given mission to expand and to spread its form of democracy and freedom. It was first coined in 1845, by the journalist, John L. O’ Sullivan. O’ Sullivan was an influential supporter of the Democratic Party. He first used the phrase in support of the annexation of Texas, and it attracted little attention.
