A striking old man. By Alasdair Aston 1) In this poem Aston strives to expose the bad treatment of old people, and show how much they should be respected, admired and loved. We are taught to respect old people and what they can teach us. The poem is not very kind in its treatment of people who disrespect other people. There is dismay when we read how little was known about the grandfather before he came to the house. They didn’t even realize how old he was. We are told that in time the family grew to trust in how reliable he was. We learn in line 4 that he enriched their day just by being there in line 6 we find that he inspires by his presence and force the family to have a good work ethic. Lines 7 and 8 have a wholesome human tone in that the family liked that he never complained and wasn’t demanding. The poet reinforces the indignity and disrespect that the man has suffered in line 9. ‘’They had got tired of him at the other house”, Shows how little respect he received which is very sad. The next line reinforces this when he says ‘so he arrived unceremoniously one day......
