�Memoirs Of A Geisha� is a fictional novel by Arthur Golden. It is about the life of a famous geisha called Sayuri from 1929 to the post-war years of Japan. The book is based on historical facts and evidence. The genre of the novel is historical romance. The book is aimed at teenagers and over as it contains a few mature scenes but otherwise, it is interesting and I have learnt various facts from it. The main character is Sayuri Nitta, the famous geisha. Geishas are Japanese women who serve tea at tea houses and entertain men by dancing or singing and are paid to do so with money or gifts such as kimonos. The book starts with Sayuri as a middle aged woman in New York, narrating her story to a translator. As a young girl [with the name of Chiyo], she is sent to Gion in Kyoto and is taken into an Okiya [Geisha House] as a maid. Chiyo [Sayuri] is a clever, pretty girl, liked because of her unusual but stunning blue-grey eyes. She is bold, strong, determined and at times rebellious.
