Benjamin Franklin – Living the “American Dream” “I was not discourag’d by the seeming Magnitude of the Undertaking, as I have always thought that one Man of tolerable Abilities may work great Changes, & accomplish great Affairs among Mankind, if he first forms a good Plan, and, cutting off all Amusements or other Employments that would divert his Attention, makes the Execution of that same Plan his sole Study and Business.” (Franklin 1397) These words, written in the year 1788 by Benjamin Franklin, exemplify optimism, one of many characteristics Franklin reveals about himself in his autobiography. Franklin achieved numerous goals, whether he was aided by others or received no help, due to his perseverance and ingenuity. Many facts unveiled to the reader about Franklin through his autobiography can be compared to those of recognized ethical leaders whose publicly acclaimed intent is to fulfill, if not at least to move towards achieving, the “American Dream.”¹ Josiah Franklin, in preparing his son to become a clergyman, sent eight year-old Benjamin to a grammar school.
