Slavery and racial discrimination served as two considerable conflicts during the 1800�s. A large portion of American Society treated many African Americans unfairly. However, in the mid 1800�s African Americans finally set out to stand up for their freedom and equal rights. This long, violent struggle towards equality included many different heart filled acts. These included the trials of Dred Scott vs. Sandford & Plessy vs. Ferguson & other violent acts to overcome racism once and for all. By the 1850�s slavery had raised into an extremely brutal conflict the US especially in the South. African American slaves made up more than half of the population in South Carolina and Mississippi along with two fifths of the population of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana by 1860. Slaves in the South usually lived in groups of 20 or more on plantations performing labors such as farming, cooking, cleaning houses and laboring in the fields.
