Japanese Canadians were treated very immorally during World War Two, and this is looked down upon when we think of the war Canada had won. Ever since the beginning of the 1900�s Japanese were not welcomed into B.C. But, it came to a head after Japan launched a surprise and successful attack against the American naval base at Pearl Harbour. The open enmity against Japan grew and Japanese people in North America were seen as enemy aliens by their country of birth, after that point. The internment began in B.C. in January of 1942. Approximately, 22,000 Japanese Canadians were forced to evacuate from the west coast and resettle in other parts of the country. The federal government used the �War Measures Act� to intern all people of Japanese race who were also between the ages of 14 and 45. Some families were given as little as 24 hours notice to vacate their homes. �Imagine being arrested, tried, convicted, and paying to be sent to prison for a crime you did not commit�(Human Rights in Canada: A Historical Perspective).
