Catcher in the Rye - Innocence Complex Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield finds innocence to be the most important thing one can protect. Innocence plays an important role of creating Holden into the character he is. Salinger uses many symbols and characters to reveal Holden’s character and his desire to protect the children from falling into the real world, as “the catcher in the rye.” The innocence of children and Holden’s ambition to provide refuge for them is suggested in the book’s title. As the source of the book’s title, the lyrics of a song by Robert Burns play an important role in displaying Holden’s desire to protect the innocence in the world. Holden first notices the lyrics when a kid walking down the street sings the song “Comin’ Thro’ the Rye.” Later when Phoebe asks Holden what he wants to do with his life, he replies with his image of a “catcher in the rye.” Holden imagines himself in a field of rye on a cliff, catching the children from falling off.
