Putin and the Russian Media Before his election, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying that “without a truly free media, Russian democracy will not survive.” However, since he became President, media conditions have impaired. A solid majority elected Vladimir Putin as President on 26 March 2000 after Boris Yeltsin's surprising New Years Eve resignation. Little was known of the former KGB agent when he was appointed prime minister nevertheless he has a strong support in parliament that has helped him push through several reforms, including measures to limit the powers of the leaders in Russia's 89 regions. He was sure of his victory in spite of the fact that a number of independent TV and Radio channels still existed (NTV, an independent television channel, and a few private radio channels, e.g. Ekho Moskvy). A great number of liberal papers also carefully watched his appearance.
