Participant Observation of a Church Service I attended Franklin Memorial Community Church on Sunday September 24, 2006 to do a participant observation of a church service. I observed the, congregation, leadership, praise time and sermon. Before the morning service began, people were gathering in the foyer. They were all in a very cheerful, upbeat mood talking, joking, and laughing together, while I was barely even awake yet. When it was nearly time to begin the organist began playing signaling everyone to make their way to their seats. I was surprised to see that I would be sitting with people of all age groups, mostly middle aged adults, many with small children. All age groups were scattered throughout the pews, front and back, except for the middle school and high school kids. They were all in the front few pews; my father told me that this was typically the case. I found this very surprising, since I pictured the kids playing and talking in the back pews. The congregation was primarily white, though I did see a few minority families. The minister got onto the stage and welcomed......
