Despite some continuity from the Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties there were many social changes and developments from one dynasty to the next. The beginning of this essay will focus on the distinct differences of the four dynasties and will end on the continuities from period to period. During the Shang dynasty (1500 B.C.E.), strong warrior kings were in charge of state affairs and were responsible for both the fertility of humans and crops alike. One of these fertility rituals was composed of a ceremonial dance in which a designated dancer performed and was later sacrificed via being burned alive. The most important contribution of Shang culture may well be the development of a Chinese writing system of pictographs. This development is of great importance because before this time there were so many languages that spoken communication was almost impossible.
