Peyton Farquhar was a hero to the southern cause. A “hero” is defined as someone who is
admired for his achievements and qualities. Peyton is a gentleman with strong beliefs about his
place in society. He grew up as a rich southerner and is extremely devoted to the southern cause
during the American Civil War. Peyton is a planter, slave owner, and politician, respected for his
loyalty. He had everything that a man could want at that point in time: a wife, children, land, and
slaves. So how could a man like this, not be seen as a hero?
First of all, you have to understand that Peyton had always felt that something was missing
from his southern life. Due to the fact he was unable to fight in the army, he did not feel like he
was really a man. Peyton felt as if he was just sitting back and watching his beloved southern
army lose this war that seemed to get worse as the years moved forward. This is why he was
